‘Bandish Projekt’ is formed out of balance between new and old – yesterday and today. ‘Bandish’ means composition in Indian classical – representing their classical roots while ‘Projekt’ represents the new sound of India - Electronic. ‘Bandish Projekt’ was founded by Mayur, Udyan and Mehirr – three talented young people who wanted to redefine the sound of India. Blending Live classical with electronic baselines, samples, scratches and just about anything else – they have given birth to a unique sound that is as accessible as it is elusive – like India. ‘Bandish Projekt’ came together in 1998 in Ahmedabad. Mehirr a producer, earlier based in Bombay returned to Ahmedabad in 1997 and was looking to start a gig circuit of his own when he met Mayur and Udyan – two childhood friends and musicians based there.
Mayur has been a classical Tabla player for over15 years now. After mastering the Tabla, he wanted to push the boundaries of his music. Deeply interested in the electronic sounds from the west he started reinterpreting the use of the Tabla. Udyan was studying to be a computer programmer and his experiments with technology led him to start sampling and mixing sounds. The two already shared a common interest in music and their diverse paths led them to a fusion of their styles to create what we get a glimpse of in Bhor – their new album. Starting out with their earlier influences – Zakir Hussain, Sultan Khan, Nirvana, Earl Jam, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Asian Dub Foundation, Talvin Singh, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, they set about converting their ideas into action. Beginning with intensive drum and bass experiments mixed with live classical performances, they started expanding their musical horizons – both in terms of their sound and the nature of their gigs. It started with a mixer and a Tabla, and now they sample sounds from old Hindi films, overlaying it with electronic sounds and merging it with live performances on Tabla, Sarangi and the Sitar.
‘Bandish Projekt' are now based in Dubai. Performing at clubs, concerts and gigs in Dubai, UK, India and South East Asia, the Bandish Projekt have built a niche for themselves. In UK they are well known through the club circuit and have performed with Punjabi MC and the Rishi Rich Project. They have also been featured on the ’Bobby and Nihal show’ on BBC Radio and their music has been used for the anti smoking campaign in UK. They have also released a few singles on Nasha Records. Their music was used at the ‘Lakme India Fashion Week’ at Bombay and they have numerous sessions to their record. Touring through the year, they had been sampling, composing and arranging for over 3 years. Out of this vast reserve of material came a concept for an album – doing what they do best – reinterpreting classics of yesterday in their own inimitable sound.
